“ฮ่อเฮียตี๋ ขอให้ตามควันธูปมา กินของเซ่นไหว้ที่บ้าน”

ธูปถูกจุดขึ้นในช่วงเย็นของเดือนสารทจีน เสียงลูกหลานจีนโพ้นทะเลร้องเรียก ‘ฮ่อเฮียตี๋’

ควันธูปลอยขึ้นเป็นสายราวกับสัญญาณเชื้อเชิญที่จะคอยนำทางใครสักคนมาหา

อาหารชุดใหญ่พร้อมสุราและน้ำชา ได้รับการตระเตรียมไว้อย่างบริบูรณ์

พร้อมที่จะเติมเต็มให้แขกผู้มาเยือนได้อิ่มหนำสำราญ

ตามตำนานของจีน เชื่อกันว่าเมื่อถึงกลางเดือนเจ็ดตามจันทรคติ

ประตูโลกวิญญาณจะเปิดออกมาชั่วระยะหนึ่ง เรียกว่าสารทจีน หรือ จงหยวน

ในช่วงเวลานั้นวิญญาณของผู้วายชนม์จะสามารถกลับมายังโลกของคนเป็น

การตระเตรียมของไหว้สำหรับบรรพบุรุษถือเป็นหนึ่งในพิธีสำคัญสำคัญสำหรับเทศกาล

ด้วยความเชื่อว่าผู้คนเหล่านั้นจะกลับมาเยี่ยมเยือน

แต่สำหรับชาวจีนโพ้นทะเลแล้ว ยังมีอีกกลุ่มวิญญาณที่สำคัญไม่น้อยไปกว่ากัน

พวกเขามีชื่อเรียกในภาษาแต้จิ๋วว่า ‘ฮ่อเฮียตี๋’ แปลว่า ‘พี่น้องที่ดี’

เรื่องราวของฮ่อเฮียตี๋เกิดขึ้นจากช่วงเวลาที่มีคลื่นอพยพครั้งใหญ่ของชาวจีน

ในตอนนั้นมีผู้คนมากมายออกเดินทางพร้อมสร้างความฝันถึงชีวิตที่ดีกว่าเดิมให้เป็นจริง

แต่ขณะเดียวกันก็ยังมีชาวจีนอีกมากมายที่ไม่ได้ประสบความสำเร็จโชคดีแบบนั้น

หลายคนต้องจากไปอย่างโดดเดี่ยว ในดินแดนอันห่างไกลจากบ้านเกิดและครอบครัว

ชาวจีนโพ้นทะเลเกิดเห็นใจพี่น้องร่วมชะตากรรมเหล่านั้น

จึงเรียกให้เป็นเหมือนญาติสนิทมิตรสหาย และค่อยเซ่นไหว้ให้แก่ดวงวิญญาณ

เมื่อธูปไหม้จนหมดดอกลง และเผากระดาษลา

เกลือกับข้าวสารจะถูกซัดโปรยไปที่ชายคาบ้านเพื่อขับไล่ผีร้ายที่อาจปะปนมา

หลังจากนั้นอาหารจากการเซ่นไหว้จะได้รับการแบ่งปันแจกจ่าย

ไปให้แก่เพื่อนบ้าน ครอบครัวที่ไม่ได้ไหว้สารทจีน โดยเฉพาะเหล่าคนยากจน

และเพื่อให้ผู้คนที่ยังคงต้องดิ้นรนต่อไปในโลกใบนี้ ให้ได้มาอิ่มท้องด้วยกันบ้าง

Incenses being lit up in the dusk of Ghost Month.

Overseas Chinese descents start to call ‘Hao Xiong Di’ to have some meals.

Smoke from the burning incenses creates pale gray lines in the air

like the trails for someone to follow to the destination.

Special feasts, wines, and tea have been plentifully prepared

as if they will full up any guests that come to visit.

In Chinese mythology, during the middle of the seventh month

of the lunar calendar is the time when the gate of the spirits world opens.

It is called Zhōng Yuán Jié, or Ghost Month.

The moment that the deceased can come back to our world of the living.

It is important to prepare offering for the ancestors,

and the passed away family members, believing that they will come back home.

But beside the ancestors, the deceased family members,

for Overseas Chinese there are other souls that are also important.

They are called ‘Hǎo Xiōng Dì’ which means ‘good brothers’.

The idea about Hao Xoing Di began along with the Chinese immigration wave.

In that time, many people start their journey to make the dream of better life

become reality, but also there are many souls that not have the fortune,

and depart alone in the places far from where they were born, and their families.

Some Overseas Chinese feel for these fellows of their own fate.

Therefore, they call these deceased souls ‘Hao XiongDi’ as their own relative,

and prepare them the offerings.

After all incenses burn out, and Chinese offering papers burn down

as a sign for wind up the leaving of Hao Xiong Di,

salts and milled rice will be scattered in front of the houses.

In case there are mischievous ghosts mingle among the souls.

Then the offering feasts for Hao Xiong Di will be shared to neighbours,

those who did not celebrate this festival, and especially the poors.

In the end, this ceremony of the Ghost Month might be for both two worlds

One is memoriam for those who died alone during the seek for opportunity

for better lives, and sharing for those who are still striving in this living world.
